4 Ways to Make a Manicure Last Longer

A manicure can be a work of art, one you’ll want to preserve for as long as possible. Although no beauty treatment lasts forever, there are ways to extend your mani’s life span. Here's what to do after leaving the salon to make your polish last longer.

How to Extend the Life Span of Your Manicure

1. Keep It Dry at First

Your polish may seem dry when you leave the salon, but that doesn’t mean it’s set. Professional manicures often use more potent formulas than drugstore polishes and may take longer to dry fully.

To avoid damaging the polish, steer clear of moist activities, like saunas or soaking baths, for 24 hours after the treatment. Even after 24 hours, avoid submerging your hands in hot water for extended periods, as moisture can seep beneath the polish and damage it.

2. Wear Gloves

Chemicals in dish soaps and household cleaners can damage polish and dry out your hands. To protect your skin and nails, don rubber gloves while cleaning, gardening, and washing the dishes.

3. Hydrate the Cuticles

Nails chip more quickly when they’re dry. Apply a moisturizing cuticle serum or oil daily to keep paint fresh and maintain supple, healthy skin around the nails. By hydrating the nail beds, these solutions can also promote healthy growth.

Apply a couple drops of oil to the base of the nails and massage gently. Keep a bottle in your purse or desk drawer for convenient application.

4. Reapply the Topcoat

After the nail technician paints your nails, they’ll likely apply a protective topcoat. Reapplying a thin layer every three days can provide extended protection. Be sure to paint the nail edges, a technique called capping, to prevent chipping at the top of the nail while typing and using your hands.
